A Q&A with Glasswall’s Riyya Ahmed, Senior Technical Writer & Product Marketing Manager

Tell me about your career to date.

I started my academic journey with a focus on biotechnology, but soon realized that lab-based research wasn’t the right fit for me. My passion for writing and communication led me to pursue a technical writing course in 2010, which set the stage for a fulfilling career.

Since then, I have worked as a technical writer across diverse industries, including telecommunications, finance, government, and technology. My roles have included crafting user guides for complex technologies, creating regulatory documentation, and developing public information content. In the tech industry, I’ve written technical manuals, product documentation, and marketing materials for innovative solutions.

These varied experiences have helped me build a broad skill set and adapt to different writing styles and technical requirements.

What attracted you to Glasswall as a place to work?

In 2021, I was approached about the Technical Writer role at Glasswall, which immediately piqued my interest. The prospect of transforming the entire documentation from the ground up and having full control over it was incredibly appealing. Additionally, the excellent work-life balance and the ability to work from home, accommodating my daily life, were significant factors that attracted me to Glasswall.

Can you share an example of how Glasswall fosters an inclusive and supportive environment for women?

As a tech company, maintaining a balanced male-to-female employee ratio can be challenging, but Glasswall takes a proactive approach to hiring experienced female candidates whenever possible. We foster an inclusive and supportive environment for women through several key initiatives.

One example is our thriving Women in Tech committee, which meets monthly to advocate for our female employees. This committee plays a crucial role in encouraging women to participate in training and professional development opportunities while also highlighting their achievements within the company. By creating a platform for female voices, the committee ensures that women's contributions are recognized and celebrated.

Additionally, our Organizational Health Committee, which includes several female colleagues, advocates for a better work-life balance for all employees. This committee addresses various aspects of workplace well-being, ensuring that policies and practices support a healthy and balanced professional life. Through these efforts, Glasswall not only supports the professional growth of women but also creates an environment where everyone can thrive.

How do you think the presence of talented female colleagues influences the workplace culture at Glasswall?

The presence of talented female colleagues significantly enriches the workplace culture at Glasswall. For myself and the rest of my female colleagues, having successful peers and women role models is essential for our professional growth and confidence. I am fortunate to have several such role models at Glasswall who exemplify excellence and leadership.

How is Glasswall supporting your professional journey?

Since joining Glasswall almost three years ago, my role has evolved in numerous positive ways. Initially starting as a technical writer, my responsibilities have expanded to include contributing to product marketing by creating technical collateral for our sales team. This has allowed me to bridge the gap between technical documentation and customer engagement, ensuring that our materials are both informative and compelling.

Moreover, I collaborate closely with the UX team to enhance the user experience across our documentation site, striving to make it more intuitive and user-friendly for our customers. This cross-functional teamwork has broadened my understanding of how different departments can work together to achieve common goals.

Glasswall has also supported my professional development through valuable training in Product Management, equipping me with the skills to understand and influence product development cycles. Looking ahead, I am excited to start working with a leadership coach this year, which will further refine my leadership abilities and strategic thinking.

These diverse opportunities and the continuous support from Glasswall have been instrumental in advancing my professional journey, allowing me to grow both personally and professionally within the company.

What advice would you give to other women who might be considering careers within the technology industry?

If you’re a woman considering a career in the technology industry, my most important piece of advice is to advocate for yourself and be confident in making your voice heard, even in spaces where women may be underrepresented. It’s crucial to stand up for your ideas, seek out opportunities, and never hesitate to assert your value and contributions.

Being tech-savvy is certainly beneficial, but it’s equally important to develop a growth mindset and embrace the learning process. Technology is an ever-evolving field, and staying curious and open to new challenges will help you stay ahead. Don’t let self-doubt hold you back—believe in your abilities and remember that everyone starts somewhere.

Building a strong network is also essential. Seek out mentors and connect with other women in tech who can offer guidance, support, and encouragement. Being part of a supportive community can provide valuable insights and help you navigate the challenges of the industry.

Finally, remember that your unique perspective is a strength. The technology industry benefits from diverse viewpoints, and your contributions can drive innovation and change. Embrace your role as a trailblazer and take pride in the positive impact you can make.

Outside of work, how do you like to spend time?

Outside of work, I love exploring a variety of interests and hobbies that bring me joy and relaxation. One of my favorite pastimes is experimenting with new recipes in the kitchen. I enjoy cooking for friends and family, trying out different cuisines, and sharing delicious meals. It’s a wonderful way to bond with loved ones and discover new culinary delights.

In addition to cooking, I have a keen interest in fashion and photography. I find great pleasure in exploring the latest trends, discovering unique styles, and capturing moments through my camera lens. Whether it’s a casual street style shoot or a creative photoshoot with friends, fashion and photography allow me to express my creativity and appreciate the beauty in everyday life.
